Dominica embracing Game On!
The International Alliance for Youth Sports, in partnership with the Trinidad and Tobago Alliance for Sport and Physical Education (TTASPE) and with the assistance of Mr. Oswald Savarin, Sport Coordinator from the Ministry of Sport, Education and Youth in Dominica, have created an effective approach to make Game On! Youth Sports a major success in Dominica.
At a follow-up workshop earlier this year, organized by the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development Unit, Sports and Youth Affairs Unit, Dominica agreed to implement the Game On! Youth Sports in-school model developed in partnership between IAYS and TTASPE.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed to this effect with the Government of Dominica, TTASPE and the IAYS. The subsequent workshop was conducted with 27 participants, which consisted of primary school teachers and youth sport coaches.
Now, Dominica is ready and poised to take Game On! to the next level. In September Game On! became part of the Physical Education curriculum, and many follow-up activities are planned to ensure the sustainability of Game On! in Dominica’s schools.
"I believe that Dominica is an excellent choice for a pilot country because it represents all of the challenges that have been identified in all other Game On! islands in teh Caribbean (and by extension worldwide)," said Kerish Maharaj, the Game On! Youth Sports Regional Coordinator. "It is also a country where interest and need for both the in-school and after-school programs has been shown. If managed effectively, I believe that Dominica, as a worldwide pilot, will give us an honest evaluation of Game On! Youth Sports as a "sport for development" program and aid in the positive social development for the citizens of Dominica."
